The first jurisdiction in the United States of America to adopt laws against drunk driving was New York in 1910, with California and others following. The law was simpler earlier and had no level of inebriation qualified. The current law at US defines it as a crime to drive with a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) at or above 0.08% meaning 0.08g alcohol per 100 ml of blood. The traditional punishment that follows after a person is found guilty is licence suspension. The degree of punishment varies if the BAC is above 0.15%- 0.2%. Many of the states in US requires DUI offenders to install ignition interlock in the vehicle which would analyze the driver’s breath and disable the ignition if the driver has been drinking. Drunk driving is a public health concern in the US thus laws regarding it thus laws regarding it are viewed seriously.

Insurance Law: It is the practice related to insurance policies and claims. Insurance companies just like other companies are required to follow the basic laws apart from the insurance laws specially crafted for these companies. Regulation of insurance companies in the US is exclusively conducted by the several states and their insurance departments. Each state in US has a statue creating an administrative agency called department of Insurance. The agency creates a group of regulators to administer the insurance companies domiciled in the state. Regulation of insurance companies started in the year 1940 and insurance companies were guided by laws, regulations, and independent commissions. These rules protects a policy holder against bad claims, unduly high premiums etc.

Several cases may occur where an insurer might deny a valid claim by the insured; the insurer may lay the burden of proof on the insured. The law also governs issues like price fixing or unhealthy competition among insurance companies. If the insurer is found to be guilty it is fined by the regulatory bodies or in a lawsuit by the insured. The license of the company might be revoked if a series of complaints are found out.
